Groovy: An examination of Morgan’s Tarot Anyone familiar with the structure of a traditional Tarot
deck knows what to expect: a Major and Minor Arcana, with the Major comprising
22 cards and the Minor comprised of four suits of 14. The four suits are based
on the standards of swords, cups, coins, and wands. So it immediately becomes apparent
that Morgan’s Tarot is not your ordinary Tarot deck.
Actually, it might fall more into the category of divination
decks, since it does not play by the normal rules. No Major/Minor Arcanas here,
or are the suits present. Instead, there is a set of divination cards that
follow their own methodology.
This card deck was originally self-published in the
seventies by Morgan Robbins and illustrated by Darshan Chorpash Zenith, and
the language to the cards evokes the mentality of the period. The art is in
simple black and white sketches, reduced to the basic of the message. Ahhh, but
what a message.
This is where Morgan’s Tarot comes to life. Void of the
usual baggage that might come with a normal Tarot deck, the Morgan’s Tarot
cards use straightforward message. . . well not totally understandable since
metaphor plays a big part – however each card has its own unique tone and words
of wisdom.
What this means is that there is not a big learning curve
for reading the Morgan. Outside of a few cards that have images only and need a
bit of description (such as the robot card), most all of them speak for
themselves, and can relate to that subconscious part of ourselves that come
into play when looking at the cards.
This deck is designed to work wonderfully when used by
either novice or experienced reader, since many of the cards carry their own
distinct message, which is both direct yet left up to interpretation. Examples
of this are the cards for “Your mission is not yet complete,” “Await further orders,”
“Ignore the preceding,” “Do it now,” and “Passion.” It does not require an
advanced understanding of Tarot symbology. What is important is a grasp of how
messages can be interpreted to the here and now of everyday life.
In short, this is a Fun deck (with a capital in the word
Fun), yet it is one that is quite usable in pondering deeper meanings to a
situation. Or, to describe it by one of its own cards, this deck is truly “Far
Out!”
This and other decks can be found in the Card Decks section.
